Centennial Mall Renovation - Consultant

Lincoln, NE

Encompass Architects was asked to serve as a Native American Consultant on the restoration of the Centennial Mall corridor. The design team used research and worked closely with representatives from Native Nebraska Tribes to incorporate appropriate design elements. Native American people has and have a significant influence on Nebraska. Utilizing cues from the State Capitol's imagery and use of icons and symbols, throughout the Mall, Encompass incorporated similar elements.

Four specific areas were targeted "We the People", "Our Home Nebraska",  "Sparking the Good Life", and "Imagination to Innovation". Notable Nebraska Native Tribe leaders will be honored along the Spirit of Nebraska pathway. Areas surrounding the existing Map will include planting borders representative of tribal beadwork patterns, a symbolic depiction of Standing Bear's Trail to Oklahoma will be shown on the Map, and the four Nebraska tribes will have plaques containing names, tribal seals, tribal flags, and brief descriptions about the tribes posted on the four walls surrounding the Map. Native language and symbols will be referenced throughout along with descriptions of positive first encounters between native and non-natives and the use of native plantings. The Grandfather Rocks - Tim and Taw - are to be relocated to the grassy plain and a new 70' diameter circular gathering area will be implemented for use of pow wows, performances, and gatherings.
